My second article on string inverters takes a closer look at BESS availability and the maintenance strategy behind it.
Smaller converters reduce the capacity affected by an individual fault. Whether that translates into higher availability depends on how often failures occur and how quickly equipment returns to service. Also, a very interesting point about the MTTBF difference between string and Central inverters: at first it doesn’t seem so obvious, but later you realize why it happens.
Using an illustrative 50 MW project, I compare string and central PCS and explore how reliability assumptions, repair times, spare parts and service arrangements shape the outcome.
