Recently completed a Grid-Scale BESS course, expanding my understanding of both the technical and commercial sides of utility-scale energy storage projects.

Key topics included:

  • Cell chemistries, battery supply chain, BESS enclosures, PCS, EMS, and technical specifications
  • BESS controls, P/Q capability curves, grid-forming vs. grid-following inverters, and synthetic inertia
  • Augmentation strategies and their economics
  • Merchant vs Contracted PPA revenues
  • Revenue streams across energy, capacity, and ancillary services markets
  • Energy markets, merit-order pricing, price formation, and how BESS can benefit from energy arbitrage
  • SPVs, project and financing structures, and bankability
  • BESS project development, including the role of EPC and LTSA structures, warranties, and risk allocation

Working in renewable project development and procurement,The course helped me build a better understanding of how these technical, commercial, and financial aspects come together in BESS projects.

Thanks to Sergey S. for the great course.
