Australia (NER / AEMO) — ride-through requirements
The LVRT, HVRT, FRT envelopes a grid-scale battery must meet under Australia (NER / AEMO), digitized breakpoint by breakpoint and checked against the clause it came from.
Applies to: both connections — Registered generating systems at any NEM connection point.
Part of: the grid-code ride-through chart — compare this against 65 other standards in 44 countries.
What this is, and is not. A reading aid compiled from the clause cited below — not a compliance document. The primary text governs. Every value here was read from a current primary source.
Breakpoints
Times are seconds from the start of the disturbance. Voltage is per-unit of nominal; frequency in hertz. An LVRT curve is a lower boundary (stay connected while voltage is on or above it), an HVRT curve an upper boundary, and FRT gives the band between its High and Low boundaries. These are the boundaries, not the behaviour: what holding one demands of the converter — reactive current injection, thermal stress, protection timing — is stepped through in the LVRT / HVRT ride-through visual.
| Event | Duty | Breakpoints | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) | ride-through | 0.001s → 0 pu; 0.43s → 0.7 pu; 2s → 0.8 pu; 10s → 0.9 pu; 30s → 0.9 pu | verified |
| high-voltage ride-through (HVRT) | ride-through | 0.001s → 1.3 pu; 0.2s → 1.3 pu; 0.201s → 1.25 pu; 2s → 1.25 pu; 2.001s → 1.2 pu; 20s → 1.2 pu; 20.001s → 1.15 pu; 1200s → 1.15 pu; 1200.001s → 1.1 pu | verified |
| frequency ride-through (FRT) | ride-through | High: 0.1s → 52 Hz; 120s → 52 Hz; 120.001s → 51 Hz; 600s → 51 Hz; 600.001s → 50.5 Hz; 1200s → 50.5 Hz | Low: 0.1s → 47 Hz; 120s → 47 Hz; 120.001s → 49 Hz; 600s → 49 Hz; 600.001s → 49.5 Hz; 1200s → 49.5 Hz | verified |

- LVRTNER as amended by the National Electricity Amendment (Improving the NEM access standards – Package 1) Rule 2025 No. 6 (ERC0393, final rule published 22 May 2025, in force 21 Aug 2025), item [176] substituting S5.2.5.5(c)(2)-(4) and (d)(1)-(9); item [174] substituting S5.2.5.4(a)(6),(7),(8); and NER Table S5.1a.2 column 4 (breaker-fail clearance times 175/250/430 ms). - HVRTNER S5.2.5.4(a)(1)–(6) as substituted by item [174] of the National Electricity Amendment (Improving the NEM access standards – Package 1) Rule 2025 No. 6 (ERC0393), in force 21 Aug 2025. Same list independently confirmed in the AEMC's ERC0222 generator technical performance standards pack.
- FRTNER S5.2.5.3 as substituted by item [173] of the ERC0393 final rule — automatic access standard, read with the S5.2.5.3 definitions: 'transient frequency limit' and 'transient frequency time' mean 47.5 Hz and 9 seconds respectively; 'stabilisation time' and 'recovery time' mean the longest times allowable for the frequency of the power system to remain outside the operational frequency tolerance band and the normal operating frequency band respectively. AEMC Reliability Panel, Frequency Operating Standard effective 9 October 2023, Table A.3 (mainland, interconnected system — protected event and multiple contingency event: containment band 47.0–52.0 Hz; stabilisation band 49.5–50.5 Hz within 2 minutes; recovery band 49.85–50.15 Hz within 10 minutes), read with the mainland operational frequency tolerance band 49.0–51.0 Hz and normal operating frequency band 49.85–50.15 Hz; Tables A.6/A.7 for Tasmania (47.0–55.0 Hz).

How Australia compares
Each event this code defines, put side by side with every other code that defines it:
- Low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) across 52 codesWhere Australia (NER / AEMO) sits against every other published LVRT envelope.
- High-voltage ride-through (HVRT) across 33 codesWhere Australia (NER / AEMO) sits against every other published HVRT envelope.
- Frequency ride-through (FRT) across 45 codesWhere Australia (NER / AEMO) sits against every other published FRT envelope.
